A good option for a “ready made” cold frame; You do have to put it together – assembly was not hard but some parts did not line up exactly (I purchased two) so it took some work. The wood is more like stained than treated. I painted all the wooden parts with clear acrylic for water proofing – I do not think they would stand up to weather and internal humidity otherwise. This was also additonal work. One thing I wish were different: the hinge action is on the outside. This means I could not put the two together over my one flower bed without a gap between that I have to cover with a seperate piece (and remove that piece each time I open the cold frame). Kind of a pain.Second thing I wish were different: a greater slope to the lid would be good, these do not shed snow – I have to be sure to sweep them off. They are not super sturdy so I don’t think they could hold up much weight. With rain, the lip of the wood at the bottom edge of the lid pools water – I think long term this will damage the wood a lot. They are not insulated in any way so you need some other way to heat the area in cold weather – then the frame helps keep the heat in, but in really cold weather, it needs an additonal covering. I use plastic sheeting. With a well insulated and heated bed, I have used these on top and kept plants alive through single digit temps. The big plus has been that these allow one to get into the cold frame relatively easily to water or whatever.Overall, they are OK – nothing fancy – but I hope to get more than two winters out of them at least.
