I picked up one of these for my household preparedness kit on the recommendation of another website. I’ve just tested it on a couple of cans from the pantry, and I have to say it is astonishingly easy to use.It is one piece – no moving or folding parts at all. Fitting it onto the can’s rim is intuitive. Twisting it so as to pierce the lid takes very little effort and the blade cuts right through. Moving it ‘backward’ along the rim is a simple and natural movement, and buzzing all the way around the lid goes quickly and easily.I’ve used the folding GI can openers, and the can opener built into my large Swiss Army Knife, and they are not even comparable in ease of use. Of course, they fold up and/or lie flat, which this one doesn’t, but for household use, that doesn’t matter. The construction is steel with plastic-covered handles, and doesn’t come close to being bendable. The handle and L-shaped blade unit are held together with two large rivits. It looks very solid. It’s small – 3″ from tip-to-tip of the handle. The blade is not sharpened, but it is pointed enough to make trouble for anything it’s stored next to – I’m thinking of wrapping it in a cloth and storing in with other items in a small box. In the kitchen drawer, I don’t think there would be a problem.
